Finest Certified 9 x 4 Stars 1798/7 Ten, MS631798/7 $10 9x4 Stars MS63 NGC. B. 1-A, Taraszka-9, R.4. One of the premier rarities in the series of Heraldic Eagle tens, as might be expected from its mintage of just 900 coins. Breen estimates that perhaps only 18-20 pieces survive, although we expect the actual count of those extant to be as high as 25-30 examples. Of that tiny number of survivors, three are known to be damaged, six are thought to be in Mint State (most impounded in museums or tucked away in major, old-time collections), and the remainder are in the VF to AU grade range.
The obverse of this extraordinary Mint State example is sharply struck throughout with subdued, satin-like luster. A diagnostic die crack from the edge at 12 o'clock extends downward through the cap and into Liberty's hair. The reverse, on the other hand, is certainly not subdued but rather quite bright. The eagle's wings are well brought up but definition over the shield is lacking, as usual. Of great importance to the serious collector of this historic early series and the single finest example certified by either service. Population: 1 in 63, 0 finer (4/03).
