Description:
PCGS 1798/7 9x4 Stars AU 50. A very rare early ten that is seldom offered by anyone in any grade. Breen estimates that perhaps only 18-20 pieces are known out of the original mintage of 900 coins. Of that tiny number of survivors three are known to be mutilated, 6 are in mint state (!), and the remainder are in the VF to AU grade range. This is certainly a pleasing coin for the grade. The obverse shows a few small abrasions, but the reverse is virtually free from contact marks. The strike is very strong with well defined hair curls on Liberty and good definition on the eagle's wings (but soft on the breast feathers as usual). There is a rich reddish-coppery patina that surrounds the devices on each side, giving the coin a pleasing two-toned effect. Of great importance to the advanced collector. Trends $33,500 (12/14). (NGC ID# 25ZZ, PCGS# 8560)
