Sharply Struck 1799 Large Stars Ten Dollar MS621799 $10 Large Stars Obverse MS62 NGC. Breen-6841, B. 5-G, Taraszka-22, R.3. The 1799 is the most obtainable of seven Capped Bust Right Heraldic Eagle dates (several sub-varieties including Small and Large obverse stars from this year are recognized), although the higher mintage 1801 does rank a close second. Of course, with a mintage of only 37,449 pieces, the 1799 Ten Dollar is anything but common when viewed in the wider context of U.S. coinage.
This desirable Mint State representative is sharply struck over both sides and exhibits glowing semi-reflective luster under a coating of coppery-orange patina. A bit of light chatter is noticed in the obverse fields, the most obvious deterrent to a higher Mint State rating. All in all, a beautiful example of this important early gold type.(#8562) (Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 2623, PCGS# 8562)
