Description:
Choice AU 1800 Eagle
Low-Mintage Date
BD-1, Only Die Variety
1800 $10 AU55 PCGS. BD-1, High R.3. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/c. The reported mintage of Capped Bust Right eagles was a minuscule 5,999 pieces in 1800, but experts believe some 1800-dated coins were struck in 1801 and included in the higher mintage total for that year. A single die variety is known for the date. John Dannreuther estimates the surviving population at 200-300 examples in all grades.
Die evidence suggests that the obverse and reverse dies were used to coin a number of eagles in 1800 and then the reverse was employed to strike the scarce 1801 BD-1. The 1800 obverse was then remarried with the hardy reverse to strike more 1800-dated examples after the 1801 BD-1 obverse failed. The reverse die had been used before, in 1799, to coin the BD-10 variety of that date.
This Choice AU example displays well-detailed design elements, with just a touch of high-point wear on the central devices. The lightly abraded surfaces show prooflike reflectivity in sheltered areas, with pleasing antique-gold patina. Population: 36 in 55, 62 finer (9/12).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 2626, PCGS# 8563)
