Description:
1800 BD-1 Eagle, MS62
Only 12 Finer at NGC
1800 $10 MS62 NGC. Breen-6842, Taraszka-23, BD-1, High R.3. Both sides have faint die cracks as John Dannreuther describes, although this specimen is not the terminal state. A surviving population of 200 to 300 eagles dated 1800 is the estimate of John Dannreuther, who suggests that the mintage may have been as high as 12,500 coins. Since Mint records show just 5,999 coins struck in 1800, the Dannreuther estimate suggests that some 1800 eagles were actually struck in 1801. We know that is exactly what happened, as the reverse die was used for coins dated 1799, 1800, and 1801, and some of the 1800 coins were struck after others dated 1801. The latest state of 1800 has die cracks advanced beyond any specimens of 1801 BD-1.
The 1800 ranks sixth in availability among nine dates of the early ten dollar gold series from 1795 to 1804, based on the total number of appearances in our Permanent Auction Archives. We have offered this issue 104 times in the past, compared to 299 offerings of 1801 eagles, 248 of 1799, 178 of 1795, 143 of 1803, and 115 of 1797. Other dates include 1796 with 51 offerings, 1798 with 30 appearances, and 1804 with 30 appearances.
Although both sides of this sharply defined early eagle have myriad marks, few stand out among the others, and the overall eye appeal remains considerable. The fields are lightly reflective and the surfaces are brilliant with a combination of green and yellow-gold. Census: 18 in 62, 12 finer (11/11).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 2626, PCGS# 8563)
