Description:

Choice AU 1801 Eagle, BD-2
Lustrous Deep Orange-Gold Surfaces
1801 $10 AU55 NGC. BD-2, R.2. The two die pairings known for the 1801 eagles are easily discerned by the closer placement of star 1 to the lowest hair curl on the far rarer BD-1. The BD-2 is "readily available" within the context of early eagles -- which are nonetheless among the rarest U.S. gold types overall. This makes the BD-2 widely sought by type or date collectors trying for a high-grade 19th century piece.
This Choice AU example boasts excellent eye appeal over deep orange-gold surfaces with copious luster remaining. A few scrapes appear: in the left field near star 2, across the neck, right field before the face, one through the cheek, nose, out into the right field. The reverse also shows a couple of scrapes, but it takes a loupe to see all of them clearly, and they are not overly distracting, given the otherwise broad eye appeal.(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 2627, PCGS# 8564)
