Description:
Near-Mint 1801 Eagle
Large Spindly Stars, BD-2 Variety
1801 $10 AU58 NGC. BD-2, R.2. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. The 1801 Capped Bust Right eagle boasts a substantial mintage of 44,344 pieces, but some of those coins may have been dated 1800, or even 1799. Only two die varieties are known for the date, with this coin representing the more available BD-2 variety, with star 8 positioned near Liberty's cap. The BD-2 probably accounted for 30,000-40,000 pieces of the reported mintage, and John Dannreuther estimates 600-800 examples remain extant in all grades. The obverse star punch was modified on this variety, as the star points are longer and spindlier than on the earlier punch. This was the only use of the obverse die, but the reverse was used again on the 1803 BD-3 variety.
This coin retains most of its original design detail and mint luster, with just the slightest trace of high-point wear on the devices. The greenish-gold surfaces are lightly abraded, with no individually mentionable distractions. The cap shows the unexplained nine vertical spikes that appear to be clash marks at first glance, but do not match up with the shield stripes on the reverse.(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 2627, PCGS# 8564)
