Description

1801 Capped Bust Right Eagle, AU58
Popular BD-2 Variety

1801 $10 AU58 NGC. BD-2, R.2. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. The 1801 Capped Bust Right eagle claims the largest mintage of the type at 44,344 pieces. Only two die varieties are known for the date, and the dies for the BD-2 variety, which this coin represents, were particularly hardy. The BD-2 is identified by the position of star 8 with two points pointing to the cap and the variety probably accounted for 30,000-40,000 pieces of the original mintage. As many as 600-800 examples survive in all grades today.

The present coin is an attractive near-Mint specimen, with well-detailed design elements that have lost a little detail due to lapping. The lustrous greenish-gold surfaces are lightly abraded for the grade and visual appeal is quite strong.(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 2627, PCGS# 8564)
