Description

1801 Eagle, BD-2, High-End AU58
Scarce 'Spineless' Die State

1801 $10 AU58 NGC. BD-2, R.2. Early die state, lacking the parallel "spines" on Liberty's cap. Only two varieties are known for the 1801 eagles, one fairly available within the context of the series, one downright rare. This is an example of the BD-2, the more available die pairing, showing star 1 farther from the lowest curl than on the rare BD-1. The reverse was first used in this die pairing but used again in 1803, showing the eagle's beak not quite touching any of the nearby star's points. This near-Mint State piece is a lovely coin with much mint luster remaining over golden-yellow surfaces that show few marks of any kind and are equally free of Mint-made planchet adjustment marks. Between the boldly struck surfaces and the scarce die state, this coin boasts premium appeal that collectors will certainly notice.
