Description:

Near-Mint 1801 BD-2 Eagle
1801 $10 AU58 NGC. Breen-6843, Taraszka-25, BD-2, R.2. Star 1 is noticeably separated from the hair and star 8 is a bit closer to the cap on the BD-2 die combination. This variety is plentiful in the context of early eagles, representing one of the two most common die marriages of the entire series along with 1799 BD-10. John Dannreuther suggests that 600 to 800 examples of 1801 BD-2 survive today, and that figure may be a little conservative.
Its availability means that early gold collectors and type collectors have an excellent opportunity to acquire an attractive example such as the present piece. It is a satiny near-Mint representative with mostly bold design features and excellent eye appeal. The surfaces exhibit lovely green-gold color with hints of pale orange patina. A few scattered marks on each side are entirely trivial and consistent with the grade.(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 2627, PCGS# 8564)
