1801 Capped Bust, Large Eagle Ten Dollar, MS63
An Excellent Type Choice

1801 $10 MS63 NGC. BD-2, R.2. Attributed on the obverse by stars with thin, long spines, star 8 showing two points to cap, and star 13 almost touching bust. On reverse, upper beak of eagle just about touches star right below its point. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a.

A reported mintage of 44,344 Capped Bust Right eagles was accomplished in 1801, but some of these coins were probably dated 1800, and possibly some 1799-dated specimens are also included in the total. Two die varieties are known for the date, with this coin representing the more available BD-2 variety. The 1801 is noted for having the second highest surviving population (after 1799), and consequently is an excellent choice as one of the more affordable dates of the type. NGC and PCGS have graded a total of 78 Select examples and 62 finer.

Lustrous yellow-gold surfaces display occasional blushes of soft lime-green, along with a splash of ice-blue and crimson resting on Liberty's temple. The design elements are boldly impressed, including the individual hair strands, folds in the cap, star centers, eagle's plumage, and horizontal and vertical lines in the shield. The dentilation is strong and the devices are nicely centered on the planchet. Upper-right to lower-left adjustment marks travel from the eagle's neck through the shield and into the arrow shafts. These are relatively light and shallow, however, and do not significantly affect the design detail. A few scattered minute marks are within the parameters of the designated grade. A curious depression is visible on Liberty's chin. This is probably a mint-made planchet void. In any event, it serves as an excellent pedigree identifier as a search of our auction archives reveals no other examples with this feature. Census: 41 in 63, 25 finer (11/13).(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 2627, PCGS# 8564)
