1801 BD-2 Eagle, XF451801 $10 XF45 PCGS. BD-2, R.2. There are two known die varieties for 1801 eagles. The BD-1 die pair is elusive, and the BD-2 is the most plentiful variety of any early eagle from 1795 to 1804. Its only contender is 1799 BD-10. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a, with no clash marks or evidence of die lapping on either side. The mysterious spines in Liberty's cap are present on nearly every known example. At first glance they seem like clash marks from the vertical shield stripe, but they are evenly spaced across the cap, ruling out that possibility. Both sides of this greenish-gold eagle have myriad minuscule marks that are especially noticeable in the fields, although the surfaces retain considerable luster for the grade.(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 2627, PCGS# 8564)
