Interesting 1803 Extra Star Ten Dollar XF401803 $10 Extra Star XF40 PCGS. Breen-6845, B. 1-E, Taraszka-30, R.4. Even though this variety was known to Breen at the time he published his monograph on early Eagles, it wasn't until the 1966 ANA Convention that Harry W. Bass, Jr. discovered a small star punched over cloud 7 just above the eagle's right (facing) wing. Like most examples, the additional star is somewhat indistinct on this piece, but all other diagnostics line up, most notably the middle serif of the E in STATES being right of the cloud break. This modestly circulated example is layered in attractive reddish patina and shows numerous adjustment marks across the obverse in addition to an ancient scratch jetting out from the juncture of stars 11 and 12.
