Description:

1803 Capped Bust Right Eagle, AU53
Late Die State, BD-3 Variety
1803 $10 Small Stars Reverse AU53 NGC. BD-3, R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/d. The 1803 Capped Bust Right eagle claims a mintage of just 15,017 pieces, with six die varieties known for the date. This coin represents the BD-3 variety, with small reverse stars and the right foot of E in STATES over a cloud space. John Dannreuther estimates the BD-3 accounted for 7,500-10,000 pieces of the reported mintage, with a surviving population of 150-200 specimens in all grades.
The present coin is an attractive AU53 example that shows clash marks on both sides, indicating the late die state. The bright orange-gold surfaces display traces of prooflike reflectivity in sheltered areas. The design elements are well-detailed, with a little softness on the stars on both sides. Close inspection reveals light traces of adjustment marks on the obverse peripheries, but no large or distracting contact marks. This coin would be an excellent choice for a type or date set.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 2628, PCGS# 8565)
