Description

1792 Half Disme, Fine Details
Judd-7, Historic Federal Issue

1792 H10C Half Disme, Judd-7, Pollock-7, R.4 --Holed, Plugged --PCGS Genuine. Fine Details. The famous introductory Federal coinage issue, struck in John Harper's cellar since the First Philadelphia Mint was not yet ready for production. George Washington may have provided the silver bullion for the 1792 half disme but they were apparently distributed by Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson, per his July 13 diary entry "rec'd from the mint 1500 half dimes of the new coinage." The present silver-gray example is plugged near 1 o'clock and both sides are whizzed. A pair of dull thin vertical marks are noted near the date, the second S in STATES is strengthened, and the upper reverse field has a tiny dig. These impairments only serve to make the present lot more affordable for those who cannot afford the seven-figure price that high grade pieces have attained.
