Description

Near-Mint 1794 Half Dime
V-4, LM-4 Variety

1794 H10C AU58 NGC. V-4, LM-4, R.4. There are four varieties of 1794 half dimes, all of which are believed to have been struck in 1795. The first recorded delivery of half dimes was on March 30, 1795 and totaled 7,756 pieces. Breen (1988) writes that this figure likely included all 1794-dated half dimes and a small number of 1795-dated issues. An additional 78,660 half dimes were struck that year, which places the mintage of the 1794 at less than one-tenth of its 1795 counterpart. The certified population data reveals a 3:1 ratio, but when one accounts for resubmissions of the rare and highly desirable 1794, the true ratio likely comes closer to that implied by the mintages.
This near-Mint specimen is mostly lavender with hints of gold and pink toning on both sides. A number of prominent die cracks are seen along with several obverse clash marks. There are no individually significant abrasions. Of the four varieties combined, NGC has certified 19 pieces in AU58 with 49 finer examples (6/12).(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# 22ZT, PCGS# 4250)
