1794 V-1, LM-1 Half Dime, SP64
Certified Specimen Strike

1794 H10C SP64 NGC. V-1, LM-1, R.6. Ex: Rogers. Mint records show six deliveries of half dimes in 1795, totaling 86,356 coins. The first delivery date was March 30, 1795, consisting of 7,756 of those coins. Walter Breen believed that every half dime in the March 30 delivery was dated 1794. However, the next delivery, dated June 12, was probably also dated 1794.

Unfortunately, the delivery records, which give the date that the newly minted coins were delivered from the chief coiner to the Mint treasurer, provide no accounting of the actual dates that appear on the coins; we have evidence of the surviving coins. There are four known die varieties dated 1794 and 10 varieties dated 1795, and every one of those 14 die marriages were minted in 1795.

By comparing the number of surviving specimens for each variety, using rarity ratings compiled by Russell Logan and John McCloskey, we can estimate that just under 1,400 Flowing Hair half dimes survive today. Working backward, we estimate that about 350 survivors are dated 1794, and nearly 1,150 are dated 1795. Maintaining the same ratio suggests that a little over 22,000 coins were struck with the 1794 date, and about 64,000 were struck with the 1795 date. The total of the March 30 and June 12 deliveries was 20,856 coins, which closely matches the 22,000 coin prediction of our analysis. Of course, the results change each time rarity ratings are revised.

NGC describes this lovely piece as a Specimen strike, showing delicate blue and amber toning over reflective surfaces with strong design motifs on each side, although the lower hair curls are slightly weak. Only a few minuscule blemishes appear on each side.(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# 22ZT, PCGS# 4250)
