Attractive 1797 Half Dime 16 Stars
MS62, V-4, LM-2

1797 H10C 16 Stars MS62 NGC. V-4, LM-2, R.4. Obverse: the first 7 in the date is small, and centered over a dentil; the second 7 is large, and centered between two dentils; crack from rim to star 8 and between stars 7 and 8. Reverse: there are two inner berries and one outer berry; first leaf extends to center of N in UNITED; shallow rim cud over ME of AMERICA. Russell Logan and John McCloskey (1998) indicate that this scarce die marriage is difficult to locate in Mint State.
Medium grayish-blue patina covers both sides of this MS62 example. Most of the obverse design elements display strong definition, except for the usual softness in the lower middle part of Liberty's hair. The peripheral reverse elements are sharp, while most of the eagle's plumage is typically incomplete. Devoid of mentionable contact marks. Clash marks are visible in the lower right obverse field. This is a highly attractive early half dime.
