Outstanding 1795 2 Leaves Half Dollar
MS62, O-116
1795 50C 2 Leaves MS62 PCGS. CAC O-116, R.4. On this variety, star 1 pierces the first curl, and star 2 touches second curl above end, and the letters UNIT from UNITED are clashed beneath LIB and star 8. On the reverse, there are seven berries left and nine right, with four under the right (facing) wing, three inside and one outside, the left base of T in UNITED and left base of R in AMERICA are embedded in wings, and clashed dentils are noted above UNIT.
The year 1795 saw a relatively large production of nearly 300,000 half dollars. Most survivors are well worn. Mint State pieces are quite elusive and command hefty premiums.
Even, medium gray fields with bluish undertones on this MS62 example contrast nicely with the lighter gray devices, and a splash of pale violet occurs on the reverse. The surfaces are smooth and somewhat reflective, and soft luster is evident. The design elements are well centered and nicely struck. Liberty's hair displays excellent definition, as do the eagle's wing, tail, and neck feathers, while those on the breast and legs reveal the usual softness. Strong dentilation is noted on both sides, and adjustment marks are not evident on either. A crack begins below star 1 and runs up between the milling and the stars in the left.
This is an outstanding example of the variety, and will undoubtedly have significant appeal to both the variety specialist as well as the type collector with the most discriminating eye. Population: 6 in 62, 13 finer (11/08).

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
