Description

1801 50C VF25 NGC. O-102, R.4 Advanced specialists will recognize this as an excellent opportunity to acquire the variety. Although only rated as R.4, this variety is seldom seen in the marketplace and is most likely on the border of R.5. Over the past 10 or 12 years, we have offered an 1801 half dollar 55 different times. Of that total, just 13 were the O-102 variety, and several of those represent duplicate appearances of the same coin. The present sale actually includes two different examples, an unusual offering. The left base of the first A in AMERICA is embedded in the eagle's wing feathers on this scarce variety. This example is light to medium gray, and exhibits nice detail for the grade. A couple of light, shallow scratches in the field to the right of Liberty's neck are not overly bothersome, and may well serve as pedigree markers.(#6064) (Registry values: N1793) (NGC ID# 24ED, PCGS# 6064)

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
