1795 Small Eagle Five Dollar, BD-3
AU Details Example

1795 $5 Small Eagle -- Damaged -- NGC Details. AU. BD-3, High R.3. The year 1795 saw the first production of half eagles at the Philadelphia Mint, with a reported mintage of 8,707 pieces. Two major design types were struck during the year, one with the Small Eagle reverse and the other with the Heraldic Eagle reverse. There are 12 die varieties known for the Small Eagle reverse, with the present coin representing the relatively available BD-3 variety, characterized by the position of star 11 joining both the Y in LIBERTY and star 12 on the obverse, and the position of the leaf end under I in UNITED on the reverse. John Dannreuther believes the BD-3 variety accounts for 2,000-3,000 pieces of the original mintage, with perhaps 175-225 examples surviving today.

The present coin displays bright greenish-gold surfaces, with sharply detailed devices, and strong mint luster. Several rim bumps, the most serious at 6 o'clock and 8 o'clock on the obverse, and a short, deep scratch on the truncation of the bust are the mentionable flaws on this otherwise attractive early gold piece.

The way you grouped lots, photographed, and presented the material was too notch. I was impressed that you took the time to attribute coins to the Krause reference as their "plate coin" and that many of your descriptions included pertinent facts and infor
