Description

1795 BD-3 Half Eagle, AU Details
Small Eagle Reverse

1795 $5 Small Eagle -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. AU. BD-3, High R.3. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/a, the usual die state for this die marriage. The BD-3 is the most plentiful variety of 1795 half eagles, coined early in the production of that denomination in the late summer of 1795. The first half eagles were delivered from the coiner to the Mint treasurer on July 31, 1795. Production of the 12 known Small Eagle die varieties continued through the end of the year and well into 1796.

This pleasing piece has light yellow surfaces with faint cleaning lines, most noticeably at the bottom of the reverse. The surfaces have the usual trivial marks associated with the grade. An excellent candidate for an 18th century gold type set.
