Description

1795 Half Eagle, BD-2, AU Details
Small Eagle Reverse, Mount Removed

1795 $5 Small Eagle -- Mount Removed -- NGC Details. AU. BD-2, R.6. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/c. The left reverse field shows evidence of mount removal and surface smoothing, and a flat spot on the obverse rim at 5 o'clock are the main impairments for this attractive 1795 Small Eagle five. AU sharpness remains on the motifs and fields. Pleasing olive-gold surfaces are smooth and unabraded.

This is an example of the rare Small Eagle BD-2 variety, characterized by star 1 touching the curl, the 5 overlying the drapery, and star 11 touching the Y on one side and star 12 on the other. Reverse diagnostics include 4 berries on the wreath (2 each side, inside and out), and the upper leaf ends at N of UNITED. It is estimated less than two dozen exist of this R.6 die variety.(Registry values: P5) (NGC ID# 25ND, PCGS# 8066)
