Description:
1795 Small Eagle Five
Rare BD-8 Variety
1795 $5 Small Eagle PCGS Genuine. BD-8, High R.5. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. The PCGS number ending in .92 suggests Cleaning as the reason, or one of the reasons, that PCGS deemed this coin not gradable. In our opinion, this coin has the details of an AU specimen that has been lightly cleaned. The 1795 Small Eagle half eagle represents the first year of the denomination, with a reported mintage of 8,707 pieces, and 12 die varieties known for the date and type. This coin is an example of the rare BD-8 variety, with one star point at the cap and three berries in the reverse wreath. No more than 30-40 examples of the BD-8 survive today in all grades, and the variety probably accounted for 500-1,000 pieces of the reported mintage.
The coin offered here is a well-detailed and well-preserved example that retains much of its original design detail. The light yellow and greenish-gold surfaces show prooflike reflectivity in most areas, despite a few signs of a light cleaning in previous years. Still an attractive specimen of this elusive, first-year U.S. gold issue.
