Rare 1796/5 Half Eagle, Choice AU58 NGC1796/5 $5 Small Eagle AU58 NGC. Breen-6418, B. 9-I, Miller-16, R.5. The only die pairing used in the second year of Half Eagle production, and a very scarce date in any grade. Even though the mintage of 6,196 pieces is not substantially less than the 1795, the 1796/5 Five Dollar is a much more elusive issue. Clear evidence of the original 5 is visible under the repunched 6 in the date.
This example is well struck through the centers (although not quite full) and retains much semi-reflective luster about the devices. The surfaces exhibit a mixture of green-gold and yellow-gold colors. Only the slightest wear is visible on the highpoints. A small grouping of tiny, dark encrustation-like deposits is seen surrounding the area of the TY of LIBERTY. This is only being mentioned as a future identifier for the early gold enthusiast.
