Description:

Choice XF 1798 Half Eagle
Heraldic Eagle, Rare BD-6 Variety
1798 $5 Large Eagle, Small 8 XF45 PCGS. BD-6, R.6. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. The 1798 Capped Bust Right half eagle claims a mintage of 24,867 pieces, with eight die varieties known for the date. The BD-1 variety features the Small Eagle reverse and is a famous rarity in the series. The other seven varieties utilize the Heraldic Eagle motif. This coin represents the rare BD-6 variety, easily recognized by the regular sized 8 (earlier called Small 8) in the date that touches the bust. The BD-6 has a surviving population of just 30-40 examples in all grades and probably accounted for 2,250-3,250 pieces of the reported mintage. This is the only use of the obverse die, while the reverse was used again on the 1799 BD-9 variety.

This Choice XF specimen retains much of its original design detail and traces of mint luster. From a late state of the dies, both sides show extensive die cracks. The vivid green and orange-gold surfaces are lightly abraded, with some light adjustment marks showing on the central obverse. An attractive example of this rare early gold variety. Population: 3 in 45, 7 finer (2/13).
