Description

1799 Half Eagle , AU53
Very Rare BD-7 Variety

1799 $5 Large Stars Reverse AU53 NGC. BD-7, High R.6. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/c. The small mintage of 7,451 half eagles struck in 1799 was split between nine different die varieties, all of them rare-extremely rare. The present coin represents the very rare BD-7 variety that is identified by the position of star 9 touching Y in LIBERTY, and the small stars arranged in an arc pattern on the reverse. The obverse die was also used to strike the BD-8 and BD-9 varieties of this date, while the reverse was only used to strike this variety. The mintage of the BD-7 variety probably consisted of just 1,000-1,500 pieces, and no more than 14-18 examples remain extant in all grades.
The coin offered here is a lightly circulated specimen, with well-detailed design elements and a few minor abrasions on both sides. The vivid green and orange-gold surfaces show highlights of peach and lilac, with satiny mint luster that mixes with prooflike reflectivity in sheltered areas. The reverse is in an advanced die state, with many dramatic die breaks. Census (for the date): 3 in 53, 43 finer (6/12).
