Description:

Choice AU 1799 Half Eagle
Small Stars Reverse, BD-6
1799 $5 Small Stars Reverse AU55 PCGS. Breen-6435, BD-6, R.5. According to Mint documents, only 7,451 Capped Bust Right half eagles were struck in 1799. However, John Dannreuther believes that some 1799-dated coins were actually struck in 1800, and the true mintage may be as high as 15,000 examples. There are nine die varieties known for the date, with the present coin representing the BD-6, which probably accounted for 1,750-2,750 pieces of the original mintage. The BD-6 is easily recognized by the recut second 9 in the date and the placement of E in STATES to the right of a cloud space on the reverse. The surviving population probably numbers no more than 40-50 specimens in all grades.
The present coin is a well-detailed Choice AU specimen, with just a trace of high-point wear on the devices. The surfaces show a scattering of minor abrasions, none worthy of individual mention. Some prooflike reflectivity clings to protected areas near the devices. Population: 17 in 55, 28 finer (5/11).(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 25NT, PCGS# 8081)
