Description:
1802/1 Half Eagle, AU58
Very Scarce BD-1 Variety
1802/1 $5 AU58 PCGS. BD-1, High R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/b. A substantial mintage of 53,176 Capped Bust Right half eagles was accomplished in 1802, with eight die varieties known for the date. All the varieties are overdates. The present coin represents the very scarce BD-1 variety, with the 2 free of the bust and the leaf pointing to I in AMERICA on the reverse. Only 75-100 examples of the BD-1 survive in all grades today, and the variety probably accounted for 5,000-7,500 pieces of the reported mintage. This was the only use of the reverse die, seen here in a late die state with extensive die cracks. The obverse was used on four other varieties of this date.

This coin is an attractive near-Mint specimen with just a touch of wear on the high points of the design elements. The lightly abraded antique-gold surfaces retain traces of original mint luster in sheltered areas. Overall visual appeal is quite strong.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25NX, PCGS# 8083)
