Description:

1802/1 'High Overdate' Five, BD-7, MS61
Rare Variant With 'Broken T's' Reverse
1802/1 $5 MS61 NGC. BD-7, R.5. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/b. This is one of the two so-called "High Overdate" variants of the 1802/1 half eagle, showing the 1 high and to the left of where it is on the "Centered Overdate" variants. But the key diagnostic needed for attribution of the BD-7 is solely the reverse, as this is the only such that show broken T's; all of the other six die pairings, both High Overdate (BD-6) and Centered Overdate (BD-1 through BD-5) have complete T's on the reverse. This Mint State example shows a few scattered marks on each side, consistent with the grade, with some minor planchet adjustment marks near the lower obverse rim. Small die cracks run from the rim to stars 3 and 5 on the obverse, the latter continuing into the left obverse field. The reverse also shows some more advanced die cracks as outlined in Bass-Dannreuther. The surfaces are yellow-gold overall with good luster and eye appeal, despite the distributed small marks.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25NX, PCGS# 8083)
