Description:
1803/2 Half Eagle, AU58
Popular Overdate, BD-1
1803/2 $5 AU58 NGC. BD-1, R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/b. The BD-1 is among four die pairings known for the 1803 half eagles, all of them 1803/2 overdates (even though no 1802 half eagles are known that are not themselves 1802/1 overdates). All four 1803/2 varieties are rated either R.4, very scarce, to R.5, rare, in Bass-Dannreuther. On the obverse of the BD-1, the T in LIBERTY lacks its right foot or serif, and the 3 in the date just barely avoids grazing the lower bust drapery. The reverse is a carryover from 1802, showing a star that is pointing directly to, but not touching, the eagle's upper beak. The T's in UNITED and STATES are also missing the serif. Since this die was first used -- even though extensively cracked -- for the 1802/1 BD-7, those cracks dominate the reverse and are not much further advanced here. One runs through the tops of TED, while the second appears through the arrowheads, (faintly, due to strike weakness on the left claw and left side of the shield) through the shield, ribbon, and to star 12. This is a lovely bright yellow-gold piece that shows few marks of any import and excellent eye appeal. A few planchet adjustment marks on the obverse are well-hidden within Liberty's cap.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25NY, PCGS# 8084)
