Description:

1803/2 Capped Bust Right Five, MS62
Perfect T, BD-4 Variety
1803/2 $5 MS62 NGC. BD-4, R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/c. The 1803 half eagle claims a mintage of 33,506 pieces, a small total in absolute terms but about average for that period. Four die varieties are known for the date, employing two obverse dies that were overdated from 1802 and three reverse dies, one of which was leftover from 1802. This coin represents the BD-4 variety, with a perfect T in LIBERTY and the 3 in the date just touching the bust. The BD-4 is a scarce variety with a surviving population of 125-175 examples in all grades. This was the only use of the obverse die, but the reverse was used on a total of six varieties in 1803 and 1804.

The present coin is an attractive MS62 example with sharply detailed design elements and vibrant mint luster. The light yellow and rose-gold surfaces show a scattering of minor contact marks and a prominent die crack through the bottom of the date. No planchet adjustment marks are evident. Census: 45 in 62 (1 in 62+), 49 finer (10/13).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25NY, PCGS# 8084)

I received the catalog and was very impressed with its color illustrations, descriptions and attractive layout. (It has better production values than the New York houses.)
