Description:

1804 Capped Bust Right Five, MS62
Normal 8, Small 4, BD-2 Variety
1804 $5 MS62 NGC. CAC. BD-2, High R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/e. Mint records tell us that 30,475 Capped Bust Right half eagles were struck in 1804, split between seven different die varieties. This coin represents the BD-2 variety, with a Small 4 in the date and TE in UNITED spaced close together. This obverse die has been called a Small 8 in the past, but Harry Bass showed that this 8 is actually from the correct numeral punch set for this issue. The BD-2 is probably the most available variety of the date, but it still has a surviving population of only 70-90 pieces in all grades.

The present coin is an attractive MS62 example with sharply detailed design elements, except for some slight incompleteness of detail due to lapping on the cloud below A in STATES. The pleasing surfaces retain much original mint luster and only minor contact marks are evident. A few mint-made adjustment marks are visible on the bust. Census: 23 in 62 (1 in 62+), 21 finer (6/13).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25P2, PCGS# 8085)
