Description:
Choice AU 1804 BD-5 Half Eagle
Blundered Obverse Die
1804 $5 Small 8 Over Large 8 AU55 PCGS. BD-5, High R.6. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/k. The obverse die is perfect, the reverse die is boldly clashed and has two lengthy spindly die cracks. Lapping has removed much of cloud 3. The engraver used the wrong punch for the 8, making use of a punch intended for a larger diameter coin such as a half dollar, silver dollar, or eagle. Exact measurement of the original 8, compared to measurements of that digit from other denominations might indicate the actual punch used.
Three different reverse dies were used with the single blundered obverse die, and BD-5 is the rarest of the three varieties by a significant margin. Only about three dozen examples are known in all grades.
This Choice AU specimen has brilliant yellow surfaces with satin luster and light wear on the highest design points. Lovely orange toning accents are evident near the borders on each side. Here is an important specimen for the variety specialist.(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 25NZ, PCGS# 8086)
