Description:

1806 Capped Bust Right Five, MS64
Round Top 6, BD-6 Variety
Extremely Rare in Finer Grades
1806 $5 Round Top 6, 7x6 Stars MS64 PCGS. BD-6, R.2. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/e. The half eagles of 1806 were produced in large numbers and survivors are relatively available in lower Mint State grades. As such, they are widely collected by type collectors seeking a representative of the Capped Bust Right design of 1795-1807. Six die varieties are known for the date, with five varieties featuring a Pointed 6 in the date. This coin represents the BD-6 variety which is distinguished by its Round Top 6. The BD-6 is also the most available variety, with a surviving population of 600-900 examples in all grades. This variety probably accounted for 35,000-50,000 pieces of the reported 64,093 coin mintage for the date.

This was the only use of the obverse die, but with a mintage that might have reached 50,000 pieces, it was certainly durable for its time. The reverse die was also used to strike the very rare BD-5 variety of 1806. The obverse die was apparently used in the anvil position, an unusual arrangement among early half eagles. This position resulted in the obverse showing sharper details than the reverse on most examples seen, including this coin.

This impressive Choice example exhibits well-detailed design elements and pleasing greenish-gold surfaces with softly frosted mint luster and a minimum number of abrasions. In fact, the only flaws that we see that keep this coin from an almost unprecedented MS65 grade are a contact mark in the left obverse field and two very shallow, almost imperceptible, diagonal adjustment marks in the center of the reverse. Housed in a green label holder. Population: 35 in 64 (1 in 64+), 2 finer (4/13).
