Description:
1807 Bust Right Five Dollar, BD-4
Eye-Appealing Choice AU Example
1807 $5 Bust Right AU55 NGC. CAC. BD-4, High R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/a. The BD-3 and BD-4 1807 Draped Bust, Large Reverse Stars half eagles share the same obverse die paired with different reverse dies. The 1 in the date does not quite meet the lowest curl, due to lapping in later states (as here; this was the second use after the BD-3). Star 8 is distant both from the rim and the Y. The reverses are similar, but on the BD-4, the last A touches the eagle's claw, while they are merely close on the BD-3. The first A in AMERICA touches feather 3 and overlies feather 4. Recutting is perceptible on the ER. This reverse was later used in the BD-5 and BD-6 varieties. This Choice AU piece is a nice medium yellow-gold over surfaces that exhibit much eye appeal. Moderate strike weakness appears on the eagle's wings flanking the shield; the obverse shows a few scattered, trivial marks accompanying minor planchet adjustments visible through the center of Liberty. Nice for the type.
