Mint State 1808 Half Eagle1808 $5 MS62 NGC. Breen-4A. R.5. Just four varieties of 1808 half eagles are known, with two Overdate varieties and two Normal Date varieties. The Normal Date varieties are from a single obverse die with the reverse dies differentiated by a single glance at I of PLURIBUS in relation to E of STATES. The Overdate varieties are from the first of these two reverse dies (called reverse A by Walter Breen), with the two overdate obverse dies being extremely difficult to tell apart. The Breen-1A overdate has a single point of star 13 close to the curl while the Breen-2A overdate has two points of star 13 about equally close to the curl. The Breen-4A variety (offered here) has the I centered below the upright of E, while Breen-4B has the I centered below the space between T and E. This example is sharply struck with lightly abraded surfaces. Both the obverse and the reverse are fully lustrous with deep yellow-gold coloration.(#8102) (Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25PA, PCGS# 8102)
