Description

1808 Capped Bust Left Five, MS63
BD-4, First Year of the New Type

1808 $5 MS63 NGC. BD-4, High R.3. The Normal Date BD-4 die pairing is the most frequently seen of the year. It is unusual that only one die state is known for the estimated 15,000 to 30,000 pieces struck. John Dannreuther makes the comment that Harry Bass only owned two examples of this variety. That fact is apparently explained by an estimate of only a couple of hundred pieces believed extant today in all grades today. Some of the survivors are in relatively high grade, as are most first-year type coins. This piece displays an exceptional strike, and the frosty yellow-gold surfaces shimmer with an intense satiny sheen over both sides, and are primarily limited in grade by expected scuffiness in the obverse fields and on the cheek of Liberty. Census: 19 in 63, 7 finer (1/13).
Ex: Philadelphia 2000 Signature (Heritage, 8/2000), lot 7214; Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 2/2002), lot 6776.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25PA, PCGS# 8102)
