Description:
1808 Capped Bust Left Half Eagle, MS64
Normal 5D, BD-3 Variety
1808 $5 MS64 PCGS. BD-3, R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/e. A substantial mintage of 55,578 Capped Bust Left half eagles was accomplished in 1808, with four die varieties known for the date. Two of the four varieties are overdates. This coin represents the BD-3 variety, which shares the same normal date obverse with BD-4, but has the easily recognized reverse with normal spacing on the 5D in the denomination. BD-3 is a scarce variety, with a surviving population of 100-125 examples in all grades. This issue is extremely rare in higher grades.

The present coin is an impressive Choice example with sharply detailed design elements, pleasing peach-gold surfaces, and vibrant mint luster throughout. Both sides exhibit extensive clash marks, but few signs of contact are present. Eye appeal is outstanding. Population: 14 in 64, 2 finer (6/13).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25PA, PCGS# 8102)
