Description

1810 Capped Bust Left Five, MS63
Popular BD-4 Variety

1810 $5 Large Date, Large 5 MS63 NGC. BD-4, R.2. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. A substantial mintage of 100,287 Capped Bust Left half eagles was accomplished in 1810, with four known die varieties for the date. Most of the mintage, probably 75,000-90,000 pieces including the present coin, represented the BD-4 variety, with large numerals in the date and a squat 5 in the denomination. The 1810 BD-4 is one of the most available varieties of the design and is often the choice of type collectors seeking an example of the Capped Bust Left half eagle. The obverse die was previously used to strike the 1810 BD-3 variety and this was the only use of the reverse.

This impressive Select specimen is sharply detailed in most areas, with just a touch of softness on the eagle's claws and the top arrow fletching. The lustrous greenish-gold surfaces show only minor signs of contact and visual appeal is quite strong. Census: 29 in 63 (2 in 63+), 29 finer (9/13).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# BFXP, PCGS# 8108)

It goes without saying that after the auction when we had a chance to have dinner together and get to know each other it even made it a better experience for me. I look forward to getting more involved with Heritage in the Future.
