Description

Scarce Mint State 1811 Half Eagle
Small 5, BD-2

1811 $5 Small 5 MS60 NGC. BD-2, R.3. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/a without reverse clash marks. An attractive butter-gold example of John Reich's scarce Capped Bust Left type. Faint roller marks (as coined) are noted near OF but post-strike contact is minimal. Luster illuminates design elements though the open fields are slightly subdued and high points have a hint of steel-gray toning. Only two die varieties are known for the 1811, and each receives separate Guide Book listing due to different sizes of the 5 in 5 D. The Small 5 variety is moderately more available that its Large 5 alternative, but they are similarly priced since demand for examples is principally from type collectors.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25PH, PCGS# 8109)
