Description:
Mint State 1812 Half Eagle
Very Scarce BD-2 Variety
1812 $5 MS60 NGC. BD-2, High R.4. A fairly large mintage of 58,087 Capped Bust Left half eagles was accomplished in 1812, with only two die varieties known for the date. This coin represents the very scarce BD-2 variety characterized by the Close 5D in the denomination. Probably no more than 80-100 examples of the BD-2 survive today in all grades. PCGS population data does not distinguish between the two varieties, but Mint State examples of the BD-2 are undoubtedly rare.

This impressive Mint State specimen offers well-detailed design elements, mostly due to lapping of the obverse die when it was used in the production of the BD-1 variety of this date. The vivid greenish-gold surfaces retain much of their original luster and show no large or distracting imperfections. A few minor adjustment marks are present on the obverse rim at 9 o'clock.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25PL, PCGS# 8112)
