Description

Select 1812 Wide 5D Half Eagle
BD-1, Exceptional Eye Appeal

1812 $5 MS63 PCGS Secure. Wide 5D, Breen-6466, BD-1, R.3. A magnificent example of John Reich's Capped Bust type. The rich golden-brown and olive-green toning is clearly original, and both sides are beautifully void of abrasions. A few faint roller marks on the cheek and cleavage are as made, as is the curious curved die line through the shield that is diagnostic for BD-1. Minor die erosion is present on the field beneath the B in PLURIBUS, but this is an early die state, without evidence of clash marks. The strike is sharp throughout, and the eye appeal is superior for the MS63 grade. A wonderful coin that has been carefully preserved since Madison's day.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25PL, PCGS# 8112)
