Description:
Collectible Mint State 62 1813 Five Dollar Gold
1813 $5 MS62 NGC. B. 1-A, Miller-119, R.3. The two reverse dies for 1813 are very similar, but Miller-119 has the S in STATES is slightly further from the left edge of the scroll. The Capped Head Left design made its debut in 1813, and type set collectors are thankful that a few examples from the first year of production were saved for subsequent generations. The vast majority of the mintages of this type were melted by speculators, since the bullion value exceeded face. Offered here is a particularly well preserved example, with frosty reddish-golden surfaces that are equally sharp from side to side. Only the presence of a few wispy field marks keeps this splendid 1813 Five from an even loftier rating. (#8116) (NGC ID# 25PM, PCGS# 8116)
