Description:
1814/3 Capped Bust Left Five, MS62
BD-1 Variety, Late Die State
1814/3 $5 MS62 PCGS. CAC. Breen-6468, BD-1, High R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/d. Produced to the extent of only 15,454 pieces, with a single die variety known for the date, the 1814/3 is a difficult issue to locate in today's market. John Dannreuther believes only 80-100 examples survive in all grades. Extant representatives are scarcer than their 1813 and 1818 counterparts and the encountered grade is likely to be in the VF or XF range. This is an important Mint State survivor whose devices display the issue's characteristically strong strike. Extensive clash marks are evident on both sides, with shield stripes showing boldly at the ear. A few wispy abrasions pepper the green-gold surfaces and serve to limit the grade, but not the overall eye appeal, of this early half eagle. Population: 10 in 62, 12 finer (8/11).
