Rare 1818 Half Eagle, 5D Over 50 Variety, MS63 NGC1818 $5 5D Over 50 MS63 NGC. B. 3-C, Miller-125, R.6. Discovered by H.P. Smith in 1906, this variety was soon forgotten until rediscovered in the 1950s at New Netherlands. The reverse die was used again the next year, but there is little difference in rarity or demand for this or the "Normal Dies" variety. The features are very well defined with strong definition on the hair curls of Liberty, the peripheral stars, and eagle's plumage. A clear 0 is seen under the D of 5 D on the reverse. Pronounced green-gold color over each side with subtle reddish peripheral accents, a few small abrasions are scattered about accounting for the grade. A lustrous and attractive, high grade early Five Dollar coin. Population: 4 in 63, 1 finer (4/04). (#8120) (NGC ID# 25PR, PCGS# 8120)
