Important Near Gem 1818 5D Over 50 Half Eagle1818 $5 5D Over 50 MS64 NGC. Breen-6472, B. 3-C, Miller-125, R.6. The 5D Over 50 is the rarest of the three known die marriages of 1818 Half Eagles. However, the comparative availability of the other two varieties, normal (Miller-123) and STATESOF (Miller-124), reduces the date pressure on the 5D Over 50, which makes it affordable relative to its rarity. The reverse die would be used a second time in 1819; that variety (Miller-126) is also very rare. H.P. Smith discovered the 5D Over 50 feature in 1906, little mention appears again until the variety rediscovered in the 1950s at New Netherlands. The left side of a 0 is evident from the left side of the upright of the D, which was presumably deliberately placed to remove the remainder of the 0 digit. This well struck near-Gem has pleasing peripheral golden-tan toning, and both sides are remarkably unblemished. The present piece is the single finest certified by NGC as the 5D Over 50 variety, although it is possible that one or a few pieces may lurk unattributed within non-variety designated holders.
