Description:
1818 Half Eagle, BD-2, MS62
Popular STATESOF Variety
1818 $5 STATESOF MS62 NGC. BD-2, R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/a. Three die pairings are known for the 1818 half eagles, each a monogamous (unshared) pairing of two dies. Two of the three varieties are popular blunders, the STATESOF BD-2 variety of the present coin, with no space between the words, and the 5D over 50 BD-3, another apparent brain lapse on the part of some early Mint engraver.

The third die pairing is the Normal Dies BD-1 variety sans errors.

The obverse of the BD-2 shows stars 1 and 13 farther from the bust and lower hair, respectively, although of course the three varieties can be distinguished by their reverses alone. This example shows appealing golden-orange surfaces with scattered minor ticks that constitute the grade. The bisecting obverse die crack running from the rim at 6 o'clock upward through the last 8, forelock, earlobe, star 7, and back to the rim is quite noticeable. This very scarce variety is seldom seen finer. For the BD-2, Census: 6 in 62, 10 finer (11/13).
