Mint State 1818 Five-Dollar--The Popular STATESOF Variety1818 MS 62 NGC. B. 2-B, Miller-124, High R.5. The widely recognized STATESOF variety that shows these two words as one on the coin, listed in the Breen reference as "very rare." Actually, there are three die varieties of this year, and this is the most common of the three. The 1818 is a scarcer date than some of the others in the series. The coin has an excellent strike, and the reverse is rotated about 30 degrees to the left. The surfaces are lustrous, bright, and well struck on the obverse but there is some softness on the eagle on the reverse. Moderately abraded except for a couple of noticeable cuts in front of Liberty's ear. Population: 1 in 62, only 5 finer (11/97).
