Description:
Near-Mint 1823 Half Eagle, BD-1
Very Scarce Date, Reflective Surfaces
1823 $5 AU58 NGC. CAC. Breen-6481, BD-1, High R.4. The 1823 Capped Bust Left half eagle boasts a low mintage of 14,485 pieces, with a single die variety known for the date. The 1823 is very scarce in absolute terms, with a surviving population of 80-100 examples in all grades, but it ranks as one of the more available issues of this series, as all dates of the 1820s are extremely elusive. Interestingly, reverse die state evidence indicates the 1823 half eagles were struck before their extremely rare 1822 counterparts.
The present coin is a pleasing near-Mint example, with just a touch of high-point rub on the well-detailed devices. The surfaces display a vivid mixture of orange, lilac, and greenish-gold hues, with prooflike reflectivity in sheltered areas. Only minor contact marks are evident. Census: 6 in 58, 10 finer (8/11).
